b07 bot lobby faced a lot of criticism after its release. Zombies mode remains high-quality even though single-player campaign is poor.
Player feedback shows a decreasing interest in Zombies. It is not intended to criticize mmoset Black Ops 7 or the Zombies Mode, but instead to analyse some of these problems that have occurred and potential improvement areas.
Development Team
The problem began in 2021, after the Zombies Development team was promoted to a position of leadership overseeing Call of Duty. It meant that they had to handle their own projects as well as assist other studios.
The unification of game engines has also led to an increasing similarity between Zombies, and other modes of gameplay like Warzone. In a recent official apology, they confirmed that in future, Zombies would not be similar to Modern Warfare/Black Ops. This could mean that Zombies' future development will be better than it was in previous years.
Narrative Regression
While the narrative has improved in Zombies Mode, notably the environmental storytelling on maps, it still falls short of Cold War and Black Ops 6's pacing.
Black Ops 6 also has this problem. BO7’s opening cutscenes were excellent, but later cutscenes provided little plot development until the very end of the season. Although developers promised opening animations with each new map, the problem of narrative still remains.
Astra's Malorum is a great example. It looks stunning but there's no dialogue between the characters, which was a feature of older Zombies games. Character interactions within cutscenes, map dialogue and Easter Egg sequences all combine to create an engaging narrative.
CoD Black Ops 6-7's storylines are a bit slow and don't provide enough information. Cold War was a game with few cutscenes. However, the top-tier Intel System it featured laid the groundwork for Dark Aether's storyline. This wasn't fully developed in CoD Vanguard.
Astra Malorum
Astra Malorum DLC maps has shown a significant decline in interest from players, which is evidence of Zombies' decline.
This map is quite good, featuring a challenging boss fight, an Easter egg that requires a lot of thinking, and a beautiful visual presentation. Astra's Malorum hype is at its lowest level since Black Ops 4
The fatigue brought on by the multiple Black Ops subseries releases is not only reflected in the gameplay and narrative fatigue but also the fatigue of releasing so many titles.
Ray Gun has been rewarded as a reward in Astramalorum's side quest. It's not surprising that this rewarding reward was only discovered recently.
Rewards Not Enough
When a new title is released as close to the previous one, it is crucial that the endgame has engaging content. This is not necessarily about new modes. Instead, it's about progression, secrets and new items. The endgame must offer enough rewards for zombie fans and those looking to improve.
The current reward system in Zombies is the most problematic. Cursed mode has almost no relics, because players are able to activate Tier 3 Curses by using Relics they have obtained on the Ashes of the Damned maps.
What other incentive do players have to continue to challenge themselves to 40 or 60 rounds of play in order to earn more Relics besides the different difficulty levels? There are other ways for players to obtain the Tier 4 Pack-a-Punch or ultra-rare weapons.
This game is practically ready to go, but the problem has been overlooked. The Universal Pack a Punch camo is available to players who complete the main Easter Egg and collect enough relics while it's still active.
This system is already available in the menu. However, it only allows changing skins during matches.
If the camouflage was real, this would not only encourage players who are already hard-core to push themselves further but it would also draw players of Warzone, Multiplayer and Warzone to Zombie and Cursed modes to take on Easter Eggs and test their camouflage.
Cursed mode has a very good concept. This extends the lifespan of maps. The problem at the moment is that the rewards are too low for the high-difficulty missions. This results in a lack motivation among hardcore players, who are less likely to take on challenging challenges. Casual gamers also tend to give up when the challenge is too difficult.
How to Solve this Problem?
The first thing to do is address the problem of rewards. Players will only be drawn to games with rewards that are sufficiently generous.
Currently, unlocking Relics Camouflage is like finding the menu. Players must find out how to unlock. If players could see the unlock conditions on Relics when they equip them, that would be a great incentive to try harder content.
Each map should also have an Easter egg that is unlocked by activating the specific Relic combinations obtained from each map. If the only rewards available are fixed ones like Golden Armor all year round, interest in the game will decline.
Increased rewards and dialogue in cutscenes may be able to reignite the interest of players for Zombies mode.
CoD BO7 Zombies does not need major overhauls. It's better to leave the complete overhaul of gameplay for future Call of Duty entries. It is the goal of the current year to fix the problems mentioned and ignite community interest.
